Annual Event Honours Canada’s Hottest
Rising Radio Stars
Toronto,
Ontario (January 9, 2003) – In a turn that mirrors
Tuesday’s
GRAMMY Award announcement, Avril Lavigne, Remy Shand
and Chad Kroeger (Nickleback) have nabbed multiple nominations
for the upcoming Canadian Radio Music Awards (CRMA).
Lavigne
tops the CRMA list with 5 nominations (Best New Solo
Artist – Rock, AC and CHR; Fans’ Choice
Award; Chart Topper Award) followed by Remy Shand with
4 nominations (Best New Group or Solo Artist –
AC; Best New Solo Artist – CHR; Best New Group
or Solo Artist – Dance/Urban/Rhythmic; Fans’
Choice Award) and Chad Kroeger, lead singer of Nickleback
with 3 (Best New Solo Artist – Rock and CHR; Fan’s
Choice). Other nominees include Crush, Jarvis Church,
Glenn Lewis, Sam Roberts, Andy Stochansky and Velvet
Empire. (See below for complete information).
Presented by The Canadian Association of Broadcasters
(CAB), the Canadian Radio Music Awards honour Canada’s
hottest rising radio stars. The awards will be handed
out at a gala luncheon on Saturday, March 1, 2003, 12:30
p.m. at the Westin Harbour Castle Convention Centre,
Toronto, as part of Canadian Music Week celebrations.
New to this year’s awards
program is the CRMA Fans’ Choice Award. As of
Monday, February 20, radio listeners from across the
country can vote online for their favourite radio artist
at the Canadian Music Week Web site (www.cmw.net).
CRMA nominees include artists who have hit the Canadian
charts for the first time and who have achieved top
airplay in different formats based on radio “spins”
as recorded by Neilson Broadcast Data Systems (BDS)
between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2002. Winners
are determined by industry vote. Three additional non-voting
awards will also be presented at this year’s ceremony:
The FACTOR Breakthrough Award for top airplay for a
new artist; The Songwriter Award sponsored by SOCAN
for top airplay for a songwriter; and The Chart Topper
Award for top overall airplay.
"Canada's
private radio broadcasters continue to play an essential
role in the development of Canadian talent through major
initiatives like the Canadian Radio Music Awards",
said Glenn O'Farrell, President and CEO of the Canadian
Association of Broadcasters (CAB). "The CAB congratulates
this year's nominees and applauds private radio broadcasters
for their tremendous support of Canadian artists."
“Canada is more than ever a hotbed for new musical
talent and the CMRAs are
an important part of that evolution,” said Gary
Slaight, President and CEO of
Standard Broadcasting Corporation and one of the founders
of the awards.
This year’s Canadian Radio Music Awards gala luncheon
is hosted by radio personality Carla Collins and includes
live performances by Crush, Velvet Empire and Doc Walker.
Tickets are $90 and may be purchased online at www.cmw.net
or by calling 905-858-4747.
