Charles Mikami
Charles Mikami is the Creative Director of International Repertoire at Sony
Music Publishing Japan Inc. (SMP). Charles began working at Sony Records International (Sony
Music Entertainment Japan) in 1988, where he was assigned
to marketing coordination. After 2 years of building relationships
with international artists and Japanese media, Charles moved
on to promotion department and enjoyed his career as a radio/TV
promo staff. Working 5 years on the promotion team, his next
role was to be a marketing/product manager and break more
acts in Japanese market. During his 3 years of task, he was
responsible for diverse artist roster, from the hard rocking
Metallica to contemporary Hawaiian music trio Na Leo, and
Seattle's post grunge power pop group The Presidents Of The
United States Of America, to name a few. Back again as a promo
chief, he was greatly involved in breaking Lauryn Hill's first
solo album as well as promoting the record-breaking Mariah
Carey's "#1" album. Just before arriving on board at the creative
team of SMP, he spent 2 years at Import Disc division to add
another aspect of music business to his carreer. Currently,
Charles has been pitching songs to Japanese artists, looking
for sub publishing deals, placing master to record labels,
amongst various other various opportunities to exploit SMP's
catalogue, as an A&R staff. His experience on the record side
of business and fostered relationship with different labels
now act as the main force of his new mission at SMP.
