Tyler J. Smith
Tyler J. Smith was born into the music business. The daughter
of keyboard player, writer and producer William "Smitty"
Smith, Tyler's memories of music span a lifetime.
"I remember playing with dolls in the corner of recording
studios when I was a little kid and being surrounded by music.
My Dad had had a hit with his band Motherlode with the song
"When I Die" and he was busy! During school vacations
I would go on tour with him. It was amazing out on the road
with Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, and David Lindley I became everyone's
assistant. Definitely made for some very interesting "what
I did on my summer vacation essays."
Tyler credits her time spent on the road and with her Dad
as her training ground - equal to her years as a graduate
of Humber College's jazz program. "I saw first hand what
it takes to keep the show on the road ‚ literally. Everyone
is important from the driver, to the road manager, to the
artist - it's a team effort".
An honors student, at seventeen Tyler attended Carleton University
to study business and accounting, then auditioned for the
Humber College jazz and music business program. Having a curiosity
for natural health related issues; Tyler welcomed the opportunity
to become the co-founder of "The Shaw Wellness Center",
working with natural health professionals. Subsequently wanting
to return to music, Tyler used her commerce and creative knowledge
to open Tyler Music Management to administer her own music
catalogue as well as advise artists on their careers. It was
soon after this time, that Tyler met Frank Davies and began
a co-publishing venture with the publishing division of TMP,
which later became Song Corp. "Unfortunately Song Corp
the company didn't last, but I was able to get my publishing
back." Some of Tyler's co-writing partners include; Stephan
Moccio, Naoise Sheridan, Justin Gray, David Pickell, Michelle
Wright, Eddie Bullen, Oleta Adams and Kelita Haverland.
Timing is everything and Tyler then secured a position with the Chris Smith Management team working with such artists as Nelly Furtado, Fefe Dobson, Jacksoul, Jelleestone, Prozzac etc. She credits this experience has deepening her love for the business of music and renewing her profound respect for the work involved to keep creators creating.
Tyler gives back to the music community by adjudicating on various Factor panels, serving on the Board Of Directors for the Songwriters Association Of Canada and on the Advisory Board for the Humber College Music Degree Program.
