Hear The 10 Best Radio Spots Of All Time
Come out to hear Pirate Radio & TV's Terry O'Reilly as he dare to present the
10 best radio spots of all time. Pulling from a vast international archive that
stretches back to the 70's, Terry has culled the list down to the top 10 spots
that defined everything. Enjoy a lively presentation of the spots that not only
won awards around the world, but re-defined their category, threw convention
out the window, showcased exceptional talent, boasted breakthrough writing,
and in some instances, set a tone years ago that is still being felt today.
As well, the current trend toward the "near use of profanity" in advertising
is going to be discussed - think of it as "The Sopranos meets radio advertising."
And rounding out the morning, there will be some interesting guests and panel
discussions. Don't miss it.

Super Session: "The Future Ain't What It
Used To Be" A State Of The Industry Debate
A blue-chip panel of label and broadcast heads and industry opinion-makers will
address this year's theme - "The Future Ain't What It Used To Be."
Which is to say, that yesterday's prediction of music industry Armageddon may
have been premature. Now that people are actually paying for downloads (via
iTunes and others) and new streams of revenue (ringtones, video game soundtracks,
satellite radio) are popping up, is it time to downgrade to an Orange Alert?
Or are these just distractions from fundamental problems that still plague our
business? This is a no hold-back must attend session that is top-rated every
year at CMW.

Canada Saves The World? (Or At Least The Music Biz)
It takes a nation of 30 million to kick-start the future. Canadians have famously embraced new technologies, from debit shopping to downloading. So it's natural that Music Week 2005's most radical idea is a Made in Canada model solution to the worldwide problem of free downloads. With 20+ billion free downloads delivered last year (vs. a mere 120 million paid iTunes transactions), clearly almost all the music consumed in the world today is delivered for nothing. But Revolutionary instruments like Google and BitTorrent comprise the key to painlessly monetizing these billions of freebies at a cost of almost nothing per transaction - resulting in revenue that could dwarf today's royalty flow and recapture the vast sums of money (far exceeding the current -and constantly declining- royalty flows of the music business) now being left on the table. With its confluence of market size, technology infrastructure, legal climate and public policy, Canada has the unique opportunity to lead the way. This panel will explain how.

Buy Now: The Shift from Free to Paid - Selling
Music Online
Who'd have thought people would tire of getting music for free? Whether it's
the legal threat or the desire for quality control, from downloading individual
tracks, playlists and albums to monetized P2P, a world of options has opened
up online and been embraced by music fans - highlighted by Apple's iTunes Music
Store, which has sold scores of millions of songs at 99¢ per and recently opened
up in Canada. But even Apple's Steve Jobs says there's ultimately no profit
in online music sales - that it's a loss leader to help sell iPods. Still P2P
technology is not going away, and big brands like Future Shop, Amazon.com and
Microsoft are entering the game regardless. What's in it for them, and where
will all this leave the music consumer when it shakes down? Our panel of experts
will suss out the future of the 99¢ song.

Research: Luxury or Necessity?
Radio stations are asking themselves some tough questions about research. Is
my research budget adding to my bottom line or is it eating my profits? How
do you separate the "gotta have" from the "nice to know"
studies? Are we doing research just so that we can say we did research or are
we committed to using it effectively? Should you do your research in-house,
use several suppliers or lock in a long-term research partner? Our expert panel
of research users and suppliers will debate the issues to help you come up with
the answers.

immigrations regs, the hefty 15% withholding tax and insurance. Operators on
all sides of the concert-booking experience will hash out revenue issues like

downturn, the bullish loonie and the squeeze of Indie promoters.

Redemption Song: Profit From P2P
Are we ready yet to talk about filesharing without gnashing our teeth? Yes,
millions of peer-to-peer users have absconded with product without paying, and
though P2P has been the "killer app" that drove the billion-dollar
broadband business, music rightsholders have seen no share of its revenues.
But even as major labels sue individual fileshares, there are a slew of new
companies offering moneymaking P2P plans. This panel will consider whether it's
time to talk carrot instead of stick, and posit a future where P2P is just another
way of doing business.

Sponsorships
With tour costs soaring and sensitivity to ticket pricing painfully evident, sponsorships have become paramount in the touring and venue game. But sponsors have tightened belts too, and need proof that they're getting their money's worth. In a typical tour, logos benefit the artist, venue, promoter and tour manager. And with profit margins verging on microscopic, who can blame them for drinking deep from the corporate well? But how dependable is that revenue stream? In disputes, whose sponsor holds the hammer? This panel will cover legal issues of sponsorship and related issues that emerge when somebody else pays the piper.

Let's Make A New Deal
The changing landscape of the music industry has created a new paradigm in deal making, one where no sacred cows exist and everything is potentially on the table. The question becomes how can both artists and labels stay in business together. In this session you'll hear about the bold steps some labels and publishers are taking to redefine the relationship with talent - offering profit splits, benefits, and exploring other sources of artist revenue. Is this innovation or exploitation? Who are the potential winners and losers in this give-and-take environment? Let's discuss all the angles!

Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, The Eagles, Aerosmith... They're

10 years from now, and why did the steady stream of mega-acts from the '60s,
'70s and '80s peter out in the '90s? And while they're still around, what can
tomorrow's seat fillers learn from the old boys in the area of entertainment

The Quiet Evolution: Getting Your Records To Radio
In days gone by, Indie releases and major label releases were provided to radio
in the same medium: the 78, the 45, the 12" vinyl record, and now CD. Not
so anymore. Now the major record companies send their new releases to radio
via "Digital Media Distribution System" (ie: through the internet
as a digital file). Headed by Musicrypt, a Canadian company, this system of
music delivery is safe, simple and instantaneous. (All of Canadian radio will
receive the latest "Shania" single at the same time) Music directors
now receive an email and just need to "click and listen"! Gone is
the CD manufacturing, design, and packaging costs, the postage charges, the
envelope and press release fees, the mailing list and the week or so it takes
to get to the station. When you think about it, sending music to radio has never
been easier. Radio will be receiving more and more digital files and the Indies
should be sending fewer and fewer CDs. It's the "quiet evolution"
and it's happening very quickly.

How Do Venues Fit Into The Changing Business Model?
There's a place where you're guaranteed great seats, the sound is terrific and the beers cost less than $2. It's your own home, and it may be the venue that turned the concert season of 2004 into a meltdown. Of course, hefty ticket prices, market saturation and
less-than-compelling packages also contributed to this "perfect storm" of cancellations, discounted tickets and half-empty houses. Is this the turning point of the live concert business, as Metropolitan Talent president John Scher says? Or did the fans teach the concert business a lesson it can learn and recover from?

Indecency: No Seven Second Delay!
It all started with Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" last winter,
and has now become a swirling - and expensive - vortex of controversy: decency
on the airwaves. How far can a talent go in communicating a thought? If they
go too far, how can a radio owner - at best, meet the immensity of fines levied
by the FCC - or at worst, put their license in danger? Will legislation being
introduced in Congress change the decency landscape even more? Will the decency
issue force an alteration of music lyrics heard on the radio? How far will this
all go before a constitutional case is made charging an abridgement of free
speech and expression of thought? Join the CMW's faculty of experts as they
tackle these questions and more, providing insight and guidelines you can share
