"THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW!" STATE OF THE INDUSTRY
Our annual blue-chip panel of label and broadcast heads and industry opinion-makers will address this year's theme: "That Was Then, This Is Now," which is to say that yesterday's prediction of music industry Armageddon may have been premature. Now that people are actually paying for downloads (via iTunes and others) and new streams of revenue (ringtones, video game soundtracks, satellite radio) are popping up, is it time to downgrade to an Orange Alert? This is a must-attend, session that is top-rated every year at CMW.

KA-CHING! OF THE ROAD - 'LIVE' INDUSTRY OPEN MIC SESSION
Money changes everything, and there are people who've devoted their lives to the concert business who feel that things just aren't the same now that everything's been priced out and flowcharted. With back-to-back tough years on the books, the touring industry has been forced to take a hard look at its basic business model. Has it become strictly a chequebook business? In this session, promoters, managers and agents will discuss the state of the art of the deal today and whether money is the only consideration.

STATUS QUO ON TRIAL: THE RADIO REVIEW COMETH
By May, public hearings should be underway on the long-awaited Commercial Review of Radio. Expect everything to be on the table - from CANCON levels to Canadian talent development to multiple licensing and low-powered radio. At stake is the very nature of the relationship between radio and labels. And both sides will have to work to see that each gets its due while Canadian artists get the airplay needed to take our star system to the next level. We'll debate what the CRTC should know about the business of creating music in the digital era. Does CANCON need an overhaul to be effective now? And who are the new players in the equation and how do we get them to step up and pay their share?

ROCK/ALTERNATIVE A&R SESSION
A&R representatives have a personal stake in developing bands before bringing them to the mass market. Yet the economic environment at labels recently works against this process in favor of teen pop, hip hop and other hit-driven genres in search of immediate sales. What strategies do labels employ to foster long-term careers for their artists? It's a long hard road to the top of the rock pile. Drop your demo in the submission box outside the door 30 minutes before the session. Our panel will listen to a 'very limited' number of demos as time permits.

THE SECRETS OF GETTING REVENUE AND RATINGS FROM YOUR WEBSITE
You've heard of snail-mail? Well, too many broadcasters are practicing snail-radio. While you spend thousands on direct mail, television and newspaper ads, telemarketing, and billboards, you've got at hand a cheap, instantaneous hook-up to your listeners in the form of your website. They'll e-mail you to give input about your playlist, complain about your announcers, take part in your contests and generally give their two cents. And you can reach out to them for even less. Our faculty will help you to think of your website as a way to bond listeners to your brand. They'll share tips for building your database, communicating off-air, cross-promoting your station, and extending the amount of time your cume spends listening to you via the web. You don't have to be an HTML expert to play the database marketing game. Just show up.

COPYRIGHT REFORM IN CANADA: WHAT WENT WRONG?
In 1997 Canada placed its signature on two International treaties designed to update copyright laws in a way that would allow the digital marketplace to flourish. All of Canada's major trading partners joined Canada in signing the Treaty. Almost 9 years later, and unlike those same trading partners, Canada has yet to enact legislation. Canada finds itself an analogue island - increasingly isolated in a digital ocean.

In June of 2006 the government of Canada finally acted. Legislation was tabled purportedly implemented the treaties. Expectations ran high among artists and labels. Disappointment was even keener. Bowing to pressure from the anti-copyright lobby, the government drafted legislation that was widely viewed as the weakest protection for copyright in the world. Opponents of copyright reform had erroneously, but successfully, argued that copyright reform in other territories had been a disaster, inhibiting the free flow of ideas, endangering the privacy rights and damaging technological innovation.

This blue ribbon, expert panel is here to discuss the international experience. Despite the misinformation spread in Canada, implementing the Treaty has been a major success around the world. Virtually NONE of the glum predictions of the copyleftists has proven to hold water. On the other hand, the consequences for Canada have been dire and will get worse. What can we do to fix this problem? How can international experience help us?

COPYRIGHT......COPYFIGHT
The Internet and digital technology are changing entertainment at lightning speed. Consumers are being offered a growing array of new products and ways to obtain music. These developments are both challenge and opportunity for creators and rights owners, and pose challenges to existing distributors of entertainment, such as broadcasters and cable operators, while creating opportunities for new players in the online distribution area.
Copyright owners face the challenge of making their works available efficiently while receiving a fair royalty rate. Existing and new distributors want access to those works at a price that they believe is fair. How are these competing interests to be dealt with? This panel will address the difficult question of balancing these interests, the process of licensing, and the tariffs filed by collectives with the Copyright Board of Canada.

These days consumers are asking for entertainment on demand and virtually free. But what can a broadcast medium like radio do about it? Is becoming an "iPod on shuffle" the only answer? If so, what new policy and regulatory directives will support it? Is there any point in adding a visual or mobile element to a radio service? Where is radio going to be in 3-5 years?
