DMS Should ISPs, Mobile Operators & Device Manufacturers Become Copyright Enforcers?

Room:
Within the digital realm all territories are encountering rampant pirating of music, copyright enforcement is critical to the survival for the recorded music business or is it?. Both ISPs and Mobile Operators have the technology to track their subscriber bases music usage, furthermore they could even make money from being copyright enforcers, so why are they reluctant to take on this role? Who would the winners and losers be where ISPs and Mobile Operators became copyright enforcers? Is a Compulsory License and an ISP levy the solution? Proponents say the advantages would be 1.The artists would get paid, 2.The labels would get paid, 3.Music would be cheaper, 4.More diversity. Where would this leave Collection Societies role in the world of digital music? Where does government legislation fit in?

The Paradise Of Infinite Storage: How This Ultimate Game Changer Will Upset All The Apple Carts

Room: Ballroom
What happens when computer storage gets to be cheap enough and large enough for all the music in the world to exist offline and locally on your own computer or even in your own hand…Or, maybe, soon enough, within you via neural jack implant? For Nothing and Forever. In this Paradise, which is just a few years off, what becomes the new dominant model(s) and what becomes of the old models, most of which (poor things), Never Even Got To Be Dominant Anyway. Obviously most of the currently dominant models from the Age of Ultra Surplus become completely irrelevant: Downloads? Online Stores? Subscriptions? DRM? TPMs? Copyright itself? Offline 'em all. In a digital universe, where one copy = an infinite number of copies, will this be Game, Set and Match for the Record Companies? Where all their intellectual property is finally and irrevocably beyond the reach of any conceivable intervention, whether technical or legal.

DMS Beyond Ringtones: The Next Big Thing in Mobile Entertainment

Mobile Entertainment used to revolve almost exclusively around “personalization.” Today, however, with the launch of new devices and services this past year, a whole new world of mobile media possibilities is being realized. Mobile Entertainment is on the cusp of delivering rich multi-media content to a mass audience. But meeting mass market expectations is a high bar, and wireless carriers and their partners will have to collaborate closely if they are to succeed. This panel will discuss the current state of the mobile media market and delve deeply into the impediments to adoption of Mobile Entertainment products and services, with special emphasis given to music, video and games as those mobile products evolve from forms of “idle” amusement into powerful interactivity elements all their own.

Broadcasting & Webcasting Royalties: The Battle Heats Up

Room: Tudor 7/8

As business models evolve and broadcasters distribute content via multiple platforms, does it make sense to add additional tariffs for the use of music in different media such as internet. This panel of copyright experts will weigh in on the on-going battle of broadcasting and webcasting royalties. Broadcasters allege the cost of music is excessive and the creators coalitions would argue music is undervalued. Balancing The Facebooks: Is There a Business Model for Social Media & User-Generated Content? (DMS)

Room: Manitoba

With the success of social networking sites like YouTube, Facebook, Myspace, Bebo and others, user generated content has become the latest buzz. The new line of thought is that the mass attraction to these sites represent a power shift from traditional top-down corporate media to a bottom-up model in which the consumer is king. How risky is it to invest millions in consumer-produced content? Join this panel to find out if content created by consumers can really be the backbone of a viable business model.

FRIDAY, MARCH 7TH, 2008 - 5:15pm-5:30pm

Keynote: Gerd Leonhard

Room:

Let's face it: controlling the digital distribution of music is over. In addition, the Web is forever changing music production, promotion, marketing and even A&R, as well. Any and all music is now available online, permitted or not, streamed or downloaded - if anyone still cares for making that distinction. And as of early 2008, the snake-oiled idea of DRM and digital copy protection is finally, officially, irrevocably, toast, too. The battle for digital control has been lost. For those digital natives, access to music is already replacing ownership. Radio - as we knew it - is now playing second fiddle to Online Social Networks, and the kids are tuning out of MTV & VH1 and into free, web-based, shortform TV like YouTube. Flat rate music proposals are being discussed around the globe, and gathering steam. Now, the key question is this: how can music creators get paid (and indeed, prosper!) in a world of open access, feels-like-free, paying-with-attention, a world where telecom operators, search engines and online giants run the show? How do we make money after we give up control (and it certainly looks there is no other choice)? In his keynote, Gerd wil talk about why it is crucial to welcome this change, and let go of the idea of controlling the digital flow of music, and where the new cash will come from - and lots of it, too!

PROJECT OPUS
Project Opus Technologies’ goal is to bring music technologies to both fans and artists to improve the digital music experience. Our community website (projectopus.com) launched in 2005 as Canada’s first indie music site that allowed artist to distribute and sell digital downloads directly to their fans using the embeddable Opus Player widget. After witnessing the continual devaluation of audio files by consumers, Project Opus has extended its mission to build non-DRM technologies that enhance the value of recorded music for consumers. To that end Project Opus recently launched Mixx Maker (mixxmaker.com), a tool that brings the social context back into the music experience through collaborative mixtapes. In 2008, the company will release JAMM, a new music packaging system. JAMM’s goal is to reintroduce the album experience to digital music. The company is based in Vancouver BC.
