Face the Music!
Connecting with a New Generation of Music Consumers
They've been described as thieves and pirates, but they’re also every marketer's dream - young, trendy, consumer-driven and numerous. But to connect with them, you need to figure out how they think. Their reality is driven by ever-accelerating technological change and Millennials have learned to adapt on the fly, so any company that sells a product or service to them needs to do the same. Teens might not be willing to pay for CDs anymore, but they are more than willing to pay to be entertained, whether it's buying a new iPod, mobile phone, a downloadable game or tickets to a concert by their favorite artist. In fact, Millennials are spending more on entertainment and digital devices than any generation to precede it. This panel will discuss the spending habits of MIllennials and the opportunity for savvy music businesses to reach them. How are new and old music businesses alike adapting to the digital world and reshaping, evolving and creating new business models that work with Millennials?

Opportunities to Reach Millennials using Cell Phones, Satellite and WiFi

Millennials increasingly demand their media content anytime, anywhere on any platform. This means that you have to free up your content and make it available on cell phones, over satellite and WiFi-networks. With more than 3 billion cellular phone subscribers worldwide, an established billing system, piracy protections and rapidly improving devices, applications, and services, the mobile market is the next frontier for the media & entertainment industry and consumer marketers. This panel will discuss wireless media consumption among Millennials, including the outlook for games, music, satellite radio, WiFi-networks, SMS messaging and video on wireless devices. Where are the opportunities? How will content and business models evolve? What will Millennial consumers pay to access compelling content on mobile phones? Will mobile phones replace the iPod as the media device of choice among Millennials? What is the future of satellite radio? And what will happen if everyone will have access to free WiFi networks in the future?

DMS Should ISPs, Mobile Operators & Device Manufacturers Become Copyright Enforcers?
Within the digital realm all territories are encountering rampant pirating of music, copyright enforcement is critical to the survival for the recorded music business or is it?. Both ISPs and Mobile Operators have the technology to track their subscriber bases music usage, furthermore they could even make money from being copyright enforcers, so why are they reluctant to take on this role? Who would the winners and losers be where ISPs and Mobile Operators became copyright enforcers? Is a Compulsory License and an ISP levy the solution? Proponents say the advantages would be 1.The artists would get paid, 2.The labels would get paid, 3.Music would be cheaper, 4.More diversity. Where would this leave Collection Societies role in the world of digital music? Where does government legislation fit in?

The New 360 Deal: Band as Brand
As the live industry continues to boom and record industry's decline is turning into a plunge, major labels have realigned their strategies to cope with a changing world, and set about totally reinventing the way they do business, a horribly difficult task for any institution.

This session explores the rising new model for developing talent, one in which artists share not just revenue from their album sales but concert, merchandise and other earnings with their label in exchange for more comprehensive career support. If the concept takes hold, it will alter not only the way music companies make money but the way new talent is groomed, and perhaps even the kind of acts that are offered contracts in the first place. Commonly known as “multiple rights” or “360” deals, the new pacts emerged in an early iteration with the deal that Robbie Williams, the British pop singer signed with EMI in 2002.

Not everyone is sold on the concept. Many talent and agents managers view 360s as a thinly veiled money grab and are skeptical that the labels, with their work forces shrinking amid industrywide cost cutting, will deliver on their promises. But record executives argue that such deals could free them from the tyranny of megahits because there would be less pressure to make back the label’s money immediately and the label can take a really holistic approach to the development of an artist brand. Our team of experts will discuss the various 360 deals that are currently being offered and and what we can expect in the future.

Recommendation Engines: The Ubersolution To Managing Music Ultra Surplus (DMS)
New music discovery will be unlike anything any generation has ever experienced. As more music becomes available online and the long tail gets longer, recommendation engines with improved search filters are going to play a more important role in online commerce. With an aggregate of over one billion song versions now available somewhere online (according to Cache Logic), implementing recommendation engineering navigation for this functionally infinite database seems absolutely necessary. This panel features experts who'll bring you up to date on the latest discovery and recommendation news on what would otherwise prove an ungraspable chaos of music overload.

How To get Your Voice Mail Messages Returned
This is the only seminar in the world that puts its money where its mouth is by applying its teachings to real voice mail messages left by real broadcast account executives.

The average business executive sorts his mail over the wastebasket. As soon as he mentally identifies something as "junk mail," he drops it into that wastebasket. And the majority of his mail goes directly into the trash without ever being opened.

The average business executive listens to her voice mail messages with her finger poised over the "delete" button. And as soon as she decides this phone call is not one that she needs to return or one that she will benefit from returning, she hits "delete"...

...and never looks back.

HOW TO GET YOUR VOICE MAIL MESSAGES RETURNED will teach you how to get far more of your messages returned, instead of deleted.

Meet The Press
The growing strength of online media and a proliferation of alternative press, publicists line up en masse to secure that coveted media coverage But here's a helpful hint: Journalists don't actually work 'for' you and aren't obligated to do you favours. A diverse panel of traditional and new media insiders discuss the 'dance' between the music industry and media and the smart approach to getting the word out - We analyze this system and see if it needs saving.

The Paradise Of Infinite Storage: How This Ultimate Game Changer Will Upset All The Apple Carts
What happens when computer storage gets to be cheap enough and large enough for all the music in the world to exist offline and locally on your own computer or even in your own hand…Or, maybe, soon enough, within you via neural jack implant? For Nothing and Forever. In this Paradise, which is just a few years off, what becomes the new dominant model(s) and what becomes of the old models, most of which (poor things), Never Even Got To Be Dominant Anyway. Obviously most of the currently dominant models from the Age of Ultra Surplus become completely irrelevant: Downloads? Online Stores? Subscriptions? DRM? TPMs? Copyright itself? Offline 'em all. In a digital universe, where one copy = an infinite number of copies, will this be Game, Set and Match for the Record Companies? Where all their intellectual property is finally and irrevocably beyond the reach of any conceivable intervention, whether technical or legal.

6th Annual Women in Broadcast Breakfast
Rogers MusicStore Canadian Music Week is pleased to announce that Ky Joseph will be receiving the Rosalie Award, which celebrates trailblazing Canadian women in broadcasting. Joseph will be recognized and honoured for her achievements by friends and peers at the 6th Annual Women in Broadcasting Trailblazers’ Breakfast. Sponsored by Chum Radio, Evanov Radio Group and Red Lemon Salon, the breakfast takes place on Friday, March 7th at 7:45 a.m. at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto.

“The Trailblazers’ Breakfast is a great way to start your day with a ‘career boost’. Radio has a very bright future with executive talents like Ky Joseph to lead the way with her passion for radio and her excellence in sales” said Liz Janik, producer of the Women in Broadcasting Trailblazer’ Breakfast.

Joseph is the Executive Vice President of Sales of The Evanov Radio Group, one of Canada’s fastest growing independent broadcasters. How she got here from her beginnings as a flight attendant and author of a self-published ‘how to’ book on becoming a flight attendant, is an inspiring story.

In 1995, Joseph joined CIDC-FM as a junior sales representative and soon became the company’s top sales producer. At the same time, she served as TV spokesperson for a cosmetics firm, and found time to be the first female host of HGTV’s “Let’s Build”.

In 1998, she set a precedent and sold more than $1 million for CIDC. By 2000, Joseph was General Sales Manager, and one year later, added Executive Vice President of Sales for The Evanov Radio Group, becoming one of the country’s youngest female executive VP’s in broadcasting.

Joseph is currently a member of Canadian Woman In Communications, sits as a board member on The Humber College Advisory Council for Media Studies and has been named “Community Liaison” of Etobicoke General Hospital’s Perinatal Bereavement Program. She is the founder of E.L.L.A. (Ever Lasting Little Angels), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating tools and literature to help woman work through the grief of losing a baby.

Best selling author, Karen Salmansohn, will be a guest speaker at the breakfast. Salmansohn is a recovered Senior V.P. Creative Director from the advertising world (at age 26), who left it all behind to become a writer. Journalists call Salmansohn Deepak-Chopra-meets-Carrie-Bradshaw, because of how she merges empowering psychology and philosophy tips with edgy humour and stylish graphics.

She’s now a best-selling author with over a million books sold including ‘BE HAPPY, DAMMIT”. Karen describes her self-help books as being for people who might NOT normally be caught DEAD reading a self-help book. In May, she’ll embark on a 15 city tour to promote her latest book – THE BOUNCE BACK BOOK – with a red rubber cover on the outside, and inside, techniques on how to thrive in the face of adversity and loss. Her topic: BALLSY – More Important Than Talent, Is Courage.

Tickets for the breakfast are $30 and are available from the Rogers MusicStore Canadian Music Week offices or www.cmw.net.

About The Rosalie Award Inspired by Radio’s Legendary Rosalie Tremblay, “The Rosalie Award” honours Canadian women in broadcasting who have blazed new trails. Between 1967 and 1984, Rosalie Tremblay was one of the most powerful radio programmers in North America. A straight-talking, no nonsense woman with an unfailing ear for picking hit songs, Rosalie was the Music Director of the legendary CKLW-AM in Windsor. Rosalie will be presenting the Award.

The Bedroom Project: How Young Adults Use, Consume And Interact With Technology & Media
Arbitron teamed with Jacobs Media to gain insights as to how young adults use media and technology. “Ethnographic” research was utilized to observe consumers in their natural settings, providing unique insights that could not be gathered using traditional survey research or focus groups. With "The Bedroom Project," interviewers went right into homes, apartments, dormitories, cars, and yes, bedrooms, to watch how young people use media, including iPods, satellite radio, the Internet, social networks, and video games. This presentation kicked off the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Charlotte, NC this past September. Ethnography research is being conducted by many businesses and industries, including Yahoo!, Proctor & Gamble, General Electric, Nissan, and Microsoft. In Conversation With Seymour Stein and Tommy Ramone
The passing of Ahmet Ertegun truly marked the end of an era. There are, however, still a few of the original generation of rock and roll record men who go back to the days when the 45 r.p.m single was an exciting innovation, and even fewer who remain a vital part of what is going on in music today. Seymour Stein broke through in the Brill Building days (google it), and learned at the feet of the masters, before becoming recognized as a master himself with the founding of his label Sire Records. Among the dozens of artists he signed and helped become stars are The Ramones, and today, he and Ramones drummer Tommy Ramone will be in discussion with John Nichols, the Washington Editor of The Nation

The New Artist Model: Income for Indies
It used to cost a lot of money to record and promote new music. Artists struggled like hell to find a major to sign them. Everything was controlled and only a few artists became stars. The broadband Internet, 3G mobile phones and MP3 players have fundamentally shifted the balance of power in the music industry forever. The new artist model says anybody can make and distribute a recording. Artists, songwriters and producers of the future need to find ways new ways to monetize their music. Why make 6% off a download, when you can make 60% doing it yourself? Who's creating new business models that work for musicians and indies? This panel of experts will drill down and provide answers to the questions that all artists are asking about. Sit down, lean forward and listen up. It's a "DON'T MISS SESSION!!"

News/Talk - Not Just For The Boomers Anymore
Like music formats, News Talk radio has had a tendency to follow its audience into middle age. There’s an expiration date on that practice and many stations are coming to the realization that the template itself may have to change. This panel discusses the ways that talk-radio can adjust its message and marketing plan to stay alive. We have consultants and broadcasters who are addressing this question already to help you find a pathway to a more youthful and committed audience.

DMS Beyond Ringtones: The Next Big Thing in Mobile Entertainment
Mobile Entertainment used to revolve almost exclusively around “personalization.” Today, however, with the launch of new devices and services this past year, a whole new world of mobile media possibilities is being realized. Mobile Entertainment is on the cusp of delivering rich multi-media content to a mass audience. But meeting mass market expectations is a high bar, and wireless carriers and their partners will have to collaborate closely if they are to succeed. This panel will discuss the current state of the mobile media market and delve deeply into the impediments to adoption of Mobile Entertainment products and services, with special emphasis given to music, video and games as those mobile products evolve from forms of “idle” amusement into powerful interactivity elements all their own.

Balancing The Facebooks: Is There a Business Model for Social Media & User-Generated Content? (DMS)
With the success of social networking sites like YouTube, Facebook, Myspace, Bebo and others, user generated content has become the latest buzz. The new line of thought is that the mass attraction to these sites represent a power shift from traditional top-down corporate media to a bottom-up model in which the consumer is king. How risky is it to invest millions in consumer-produced content? Join this panel to find out if content created by consumers can really be the backbone of a viable business model.

The New Indie-Friendly Eco-System: The Independent Promoter Panel

Similarly there are plenty of indie success stories in the wake of big label downsizings and meltdowns. Keynote: Gerd Leonhard
Let's face it: controlling the digital distribution of music is over. In addition, the Web is forever changing music production, promotion, marketing and even A&R, as well. Any and all music is now available online, permitted or not, streamed or downloaded - if anyone still cares for making that distinction. And as of early 2008, the snake-oiled idea of DRM and digital copy protection is finally, officially, irrevocably, toast, too. The battle for digital control has been lost. For those digital natives, access to music is already replacing ownership. Radio - as we knew it - is now playing second fiddle to Online Social Networks, and the kids are tuning out of MTV & VH1 and into free, web-based, shortform TV like YouTube. Flat rate music proposals are being discussed around the globe, and gathering steam. Now, the key question is this: how can music creators get paid (and indeed, prosper!) in a world of open access, feels-like-free, paying-with-attention, a world where telecom operators, search engines and online giants run the show? How do we make money after we give up control (and it certainly looks there is no other choice)? In his keynote, Gerd wil talk about why it is crucial to welcome this change, and let go of the idea of controlling the digital flow of music, and where the new cash will come from - and lots of it, too!

In addition, Kadoink offers API’s that allow social application developers to integrate advanced mobile telephony and messaging capabilities into their offerings. PROJECT OPUS
Project Opus Technologies’ goal is to bring music technologies to both fans and artists to improve the digital music experience. Our community website (projectopus.com) launched in 2005 as Canada’s first indie music site that allowed artist to distribute and sell digital downloads directly to their fans using the embeddable Opus Player widget. After witnessing the continual devaluation of audio files by consumers, Project Opus has extended its mission to build non-DRM technologies that enhance the value of recorded music for consumers. To that end Project Opus recently launched Mixx Maker (mixxmaker.com), a tool that brings the social context back into the music experience through collaborative mixtapes. In 2008, the company will release JAMM, a new music packaging system. JAMM’s goal is to reintroduce the album experience to digital music. The company is based in Vancouver BC.

Edison Media Research Radio & Internet Summit
1. Content--what do listeners expect from a radio station website, and more importantly, what could radio stations provide that goes beyond the expected to create a compelling destination that makes sense and inspires listeners to visit and interact with regularly. We will also 'dissect' some existing sites to determine what kinds of content work, and which ones are actually hindering your website's ability to engage listeners.

2. Design and Development--not just a 'technology' panel, this workshop will delve into the technologies and design choices that can help radio stations build active and flourishing social networking sites of their own. We will examine which functions and technologies are hype, and which ones could genuinely revolutionize radio websites. We will also look at the importance of design and why it counts for more than just pretty graphics. Again, we will place several real sites under the microscope to analyze some of the current choices and how they could be optimized

3. Sales and Marketing. A web property has to do more for radio in 2008 than just be a bulletin board or a long screen full of banner ads--it has to be monetized and optimized to deliver highly targeted content--and highly targeted advertising. This panel will explore context-dependent advertising, non-traditional revenue and the meaning of "inventory" on the web. We will also explore proven techniques and skills to transfer to your sales department so that selling the web site doesn't become merely "value added" for spot buys, but taps into the true power and revenue potential of online sales.
