Cumulus is a 570-station giant impacting 120 markets, a company whose properties include a radio network serving more than 4500 stations. With that track record, Lew is also one of the top U.S. market strategists, via his Stratford Research, which has offered consulting to radio and TV clients since 1985.

The era of the 360 model has put one more corporate finger in the concert pie - to the consternation of some venue bookers who are on the front lines of an often-tempestuous relationship with their ticket-buyers. With so much of the concert business model in corporate hands, some prestigious venues are starting to look at the value they add and concluding they’re better off buying in-house. In this session, we’ll crunch the numbers for venue entrepreneurialism and figure out whether it’s a more profitable road.

- PRODUCING ECSTACY, THE ONCE AND FUTURE MATTER OF MUSIC: A CONVERSATION WITH GEORGE MASSENBURG, SANDY PEARLMAN AND DON MCLEAN, aka MPM SUPERGROUP
-
- Salon A
Following up on last year’s awesome conversation regarding what happens after Music Falls from Grace, MPM Supergroup (Massenburg, Pearlman and McLean) returns to conjure how it is no matter what happens to, for and against Music, Music will “remain in light” as the vehicle whereby Ecstasy is produced for and by its audience. After all that has happened with Music, in the discontinuous transformations from scribbles on paper to wax to vinyl, from tape to DAW, from analog to digital, from material to immaterial, from MP3 to the miraculous Resurrection of Vinyl itself: The Future of Music will always cycle back to its original project from its remotest past, the production of Ecstasy on Demand. Which technological, performance and compositional imperatives are entailed, which kinds of music and how do (and did) they sound? “Same as it always was,” this is the matter of the Production of Ecstasy. If human beings have always required ecstasy, do they need it now more than ever? Is the technology getting in the way? Can—and will—Music still produce it? Once again, see the professors collide.

Spain’s live music market surpasses the U.K.’s recorded sales. Each presentation – all of which will be run off my laptop – is short to provide as much content as possible, and to account for shrinking attention spans.
Greg, here are the descriptors for each session:
1. Player introductions
2. The Killer B’s for Talent – Fred Jacobs provides 10 important tips (that all start with “Be”) to help talent grow & to guide programmers in what to look for in new hires. Presented by Fred Jacobs.
3. Five “Zuckerisms” to Better Understand Facebook – Jacobs Media’s Lori Lewis looks deep into the heart of Mark Zuckerberg to provide guidance about where Facebook is heading and how any station can reap the rewards.
4. 20 Great Ideas In 20 Minutes – You need ideas and you need them now. Corus’ J.J. Johnston takes a deep breath and provides Spring Training attendees with proven concepts that generate audience, revenue, word of mouth – or all three.
5. The Art of the Tease – In PPM, it’s all about creating more listening occasions. Jacobs Media’s Ralph Cipolla breaks down the essentials in writing and executing compelling teases that work in any market size and format.
6. Marketing Lessons I Learned from KISS – Marketing strategist and consultant Michael Brandvold has been there – working closely with Gene Simmons & KISS, as well as other name brand bands. In this session, he takes us backstage and reveals strategies that any brand can apply.
7. Mastering Facebook’s Timeline – As programmers and digital strategists prepare their stations for the next book, Facebook has changed the rules…again. Lori Lewis returns to walk us through the Timeline feature and how to make it work for your brand.
8. Optimizing Listener Involvement in Radio – Vision Critical’s Jeff Vidler and Sparknet Communications’ Arnie Celsie take on the challenge of on-air callers using new online research that reveals “best practices.”

- SOCAN: LIFE OF A SONG
-
- Salon B
Songwriters ask the question all the time; "What is a hit song worth"? Depending on the genre and performance type, there are always ball park figures. But the correct answer is... it depends upon the Life of the Song. That is, songs come and go on the charts, but the good ones always find their way back, again and again. Fact of the matter is, a hit song in the 80's can come back in 2009 and be as good to you as it ever was before. Songs can have "9 Lives" and licensing them in unique and creative ways can help fund your retirement or your kid's education. This panel will focus on Dan Hill's classic hit; "Sometimes When We Touch". Hear how the song was written, produced and became a success story and how it has since been used over again through the years via covers, and placement in film, television, and advertising. More importantly, hear how much money can be made from your song that just won't go away!

- HOW ARTISTS ARE BEING DISCOVERED: A&R IN A NEW WORLD
-
- Ballroom
A&R used to be simple stuff. You’d get a CD demo (an obsolete medium), plug the artist to your friends at the papers (remember them?), convince radio PDs to insert the song (yes, they used to be able to do that) and ship the product to, um, record stores. So what’s replaced all that in the A&R job description? This session examines how A&R is evolving to operate within new music platforms - both on the discovery side and the delivery side. In this day when less artists are being signed to major labels, it’s now more important than ever to develop an artist brand and connection with the fans and industry via direct means (before a label comes on board). The basics have not changed; however, it requires more noise and momentum to trigger the interest of a label these days…find out what it takes to discover and develop talent and market opportunity in today’s climate.
